Private/Public Beach Nourishment

A group of shorefront property owners in Chatham proposed a project that would ultimately prove to benefit both the residents and the Town. The idea was to nourish a beach in front of their properties and at the same time create piping plover habitat at the Chatham’s Mill Creek. This was done by removing grass from a part of the beach where plovers would nest, and relocating that grass and 20,000 cubic yards of underlying sand a few miles up the shoreline in order to build a dune and a beach there. Coastal Engineering Co. performed data collection and design development, as well as coordinated permitting and construction for the project.

  • Shorefront inspection and report
  • Hydrographic, topographic, and eelgrass surveys; resource area delineation; and preparation of existing conditions plan
  • Engineering analysis and plan preparation for beach nourishment
  • Environmental permitting at the local, county and state levels
  • Construction administration
  • Beach monitoring with plans recording the services
