Coastal Engineering Co. was established by Thomas “Will” Joy in 1976 - a year after Massachusetts enacted its first state-wide building code - to address the growing engineering needs of local community. In 1983, Coastal merged with Nickerson & Berger, creating a full-service, multi-disciplined engineering and land surveying firm. In 2004, a group of long-time employees took the reins over, continuing Thomas Joy’s legacy of integrity, strong work ethic, and a high degree of client and community service.
We celebrated our 40th Anniversary in 2016 and invite you to watch the video recapping our most prominent milestones to date!
We’ve come a long way since the days of T-squares and slide rules. From communication to integrated software and cloud-based collaborative tools, we evaluate and incorporate new technologies and innovation into our core business to address the varied needs of our clients, while at the same time respecting the delicate balance between new and well established technology with proven performance track record. We are Cape and Islands Green-certified and offer LEED AP BD&C services for environmentally responsible construction projects.
Project teams led by experienced project managers are dedicated to each project and include licensed professional engineers, land surveyors, soil evaluators, hydrogeologists, wetland delineation specialists, sanitarians, wastewater treatment plant operators and environmental permitting specialists as necessary to meet the objectives.
We strive to attain timely project goals starting with careful existing conditions reviews, surveys and feasibility assessments through planning, design, permitting and construction administration. Throughout the process, we communicate closely with our clients to ensure the continuity and efficiency of the design process.
