Coastal Engineering Co. provided civil engineering services for upgrades to this neighborhood open space in the “tree streets” of downtown Hyannis. Serving as a local amenity and linchpin between neighboring residential streets, the community called for: updates to the existing play structures; flexible use open space; and safety in the form of lighting and visibility across the park. This was accomplished by removing an asphalt section of the street that cut through the center and connecting two parcels into one larger park with continuous views and low-level lighting maintained throughout the landscape. New amenities include paths, benches, signage, and granite curb installation around the edges of the park. An “outdoor classroom” playground keeps a connection between the landscape and the community as a reference to the previously located here orchard.
Another aspect of the project was addressing the flooding problems at the park, which were solved in tandem with Offshoots Landscape Architects through grading and drainage solutions. Selected plant species allow for the tactful integration of bio filtration rain gardens as well as preservation of native wildlife.
