Eastward Ho! Country Club Shorefront Restoration And Erosion Control

Protecting a Links-Style Golf Course from Erosion and Upgrading Service Facilities

Eastward Ho! Country Club is an oceanfront golf course and recreational facility located in Chatham, MA, a breathtaking seaside community on Cape Cod. The golf course, developed by Englishman, William Herbert Fowler, is a “links course”, the oldest style of golf course, traditionally located in a coastal area, on sandy soil, where changing wind conditions bring an added level of excitement to golfers.

In order to protect the course from erosion, erosion control measures had to be put in place. Coastal Engineering Co. designed and permitted a combination of shore protection measures including rock revetments, fiber roll revetments, salt marsh creation, slope protection. The project was completed after years of review, as the it is located in an area of critical environmental concern. Shown below is the shorefront protection portion of the work; the civil engineering work can be seen here.

  • Consultation, coordination, and project planning
  • Study of tidal prisms in order to design marshes at correct height
  • Prepare and File Notice of Intent (NOI), Ch912, ACOE, ENF
