Bringing 1836 Meetinghouse to Its Former Glory
The significant 1836 meetinghouse, an exemplary model of early Greek and Gothic design and once an important center for worship and social activity, had fallen into great disrepair. Friends of the South Harwich Meetinghouse, Inc. have worked tirelessly in their effort to return the Meetinghouse to its original condition, worthy of its recognition in the National Register of Historic Places. Coastal Engineering Co. assisted the preservation and restoration efforts through providing structural engineering for the foundation replacement and floor augmentation. Today, retaining its historically accurate colors, materials, and decor, the Meetinghouse is reimagined as a fine center for Cultural Arts, Performance, Education, and community gathering. The project has received a 2019 Massachusetts Historical Commission Historic Preservation Award.
